Types and Timing of Screening Tests
You may be offered many screening tests during pregnancy by a health-care provider to help you learn more information about your pregnancy and/or your baby. Some tests can only be done during a short window of time during early pregnancy. Learning about your options will help you have informed discussions with a health-care provider and your support people.
An ultrasound is a safe test that uses sound waves to take pictures of your baby during pregnancy. It helps figure out how far along the pregnancy is and checks the baby’s growth and development.
Diagnostic testing checks the baby's chromosomes by looking at a small sample of the placenta (chorionic villus sampling) or the fluid around the baby (amniocentesis). These tests have a risk of miscarriage but can give clear answers (yes or no) about certain chromosome differences, like Down syndrome.
